Lafontaine on the Mountain

Earlier this year, the Seven Summits Centre for Learning added a new person to their staff in the Operations Manager position. The position provides the operational maintenance of the Centre and offers support for the administrative and teaching staff. How fortunate that Martine Lafontaine applied for this position; she is a seasoned professional who possesses a multitude of abilities.

Lafontaine brings a vast array of experience to Seven Summits, matched equally by her verve for adventure. As her name suggests, Lafontaine contributes a reservoir of skills, expertise, and enthusiasm to the job. She is bilingual, holds a bachelor’s in Human Resources, and has an exciting palette of knowledge ranging from a Red Cross instructor, lifeguard, yoga instructor, ski instructor, and bike patroller.

Why Rossland? Like so many before her, Lafontaine left La Belle Province, Quebec, to ski for a season in B.C., and she never left. After spending ten years skiing, biking, and enjoying the outdoors in Whistler, she decided to move to the Kootenays with her partner to explore another beautiful part of British Columbia. They fell in love with the area, decided to stay and welcomed a daughter two years ago. Since then, they have been busy getting to know all the lakes, trails, and fun places and intend to continue enjoying all the Kootenays offer.

Lafontaine has a strong background in administration, accounting, and non-profit and charity organizations. Ambitious and hardworking, she's not afraid to roll up her sleeves and get the job done. After years of skiing and patrolling, she has experienced many exciting adventures and opportunities. Rounded out by her love for nature, Lafontaine enjoys yoga and gardening.

“I am interested in all things sustainable,” says Lafontaine. “So what is better than working at a high school that produces our future employees, politicians, and scientists. Seven Summits Centre For Learning is an excellent school with impressive students. I can only hope that my daughter will go to this school one day. High school was not like this when I went to school. The support and encouragement that students receive here are invaluable. I have been impressed each day with the structure and administration.”

Seven Summits Centre for Learning was founded by the community for the community. Seven Summits owes its existence to a progressive and passionate group of visionary founders who decided to open the Centre for Grades 8 through 12 in Rossland when the secondary school closed its doors to high school students in 2013.

“I see why these students love their high school education, and they take the opportunity to pursue outdoor athletic adventures in the Rossland playground while still getting advanced academic results. It is the best of both worlds for these fortunate students, and I am so honoured to be a part of their journey,” concludes Lafontaine.
